You start with a broad foundation and, during the programme, put together your own learning pathway, tailored to your talents and interests. Through your choice of projects, work placements or studios, you can specialise or, conversely, develop a broad skill set as a media designer.
Within the Media and Design programme, it is also possible to opt for the accelerated pathway or the personalised learning pathway in Media Design. This is a form of education at SintLucas that allows maximum flexibility for your learning process. What do I do?
A typical approach for a media designer? You start by coming up with an idea, a concept. To do this, you research the client, the target audience and the problem for which you are developing a solution.
You experiment with different forms, styles and media to convey your story and message in a compelling way. Then you create prototypes. This helps you to discuss your ideas and find out whether they actually work. As a final step, you get to work on the production process. This might involve things like 3D visualisations or the latest forms of robotics or AI.
What do I create?
The role of a media designer is wide-ranging. Examples of media you’ll work on include websites, apps, virtual reality applications, animations, games, (digital) illustrations and posters. You’ll also develop complete campaigns combining logos, corporate identity, photos and video. You’ll also develop complete campaigns combining logos, corporate identity, photos and video.
What will I learn on the Media Design course?
During the introductory phase of the programme, you will develop a solid foundation of knowledge and skills: 2D and 3D design, animation, UX/UI design, interactive media, motion graphics, video editing, creative prototyping and various software programmes, including the Adobe suites and Blender. You will learn to develop concepts, visualise ideas and create digital and physical products that communicate effectively and resonate with audiences. During the specialisation phase, you will work on assignments in the field that appeals to you. You can also opt for large-scale projects in which you collaborate with students from other programmes in studios, for example in the fields of Visual Design & Motion, Game Design & Technology or Media & Interaction Design. In the specialisation phase, you will further develop as a professional on your way to the creative-technical sector or higher professional education. Naturally, general subjects such as Dutch, English, maths and citizenship are also covered.
Specialisation or a broad-based programme: elective modules and studios
Within the media design programme, you can specialise in a particular field or develop a broad skill set as a media designer. You can do this, for example, by taking elective modules. Examples include Gameplay, Animation, Illustration and Creative Specialisation. You can also specialise or gain broad experience by choosing specific assignments during the programme or securing an internship in a particular field. The same applies to working in Studios that focus on specific themes.
The elective modules and themes of the Studios may change each year, ensuring that our teaching programme remains aligned with what industry demands.
Where will I do my work placement?
You will undertake two six-month internships. Depending on your interests and learning objectives, you will choose an organisation that suits you. The Media Design programme offers a wide range of opportunities: at an advertising or communications agency, a design studio, a multimedia company, a games, animation or illustration studio, a digital design agency or, for example, a product development company. You can also work in the field of user experience design or interaction design. Organisations in the field of social design or interactive art design agencies are also among the possibilities.

What skills do I need, and what should I enjoy?
You have an eye for design, communication and technology. You are good at empathising with others and are interested in human behaviour. You are curious, inquisitive and enjoy experimenting. Naturally, you keep a close eye on technological innovations and other trends. By combining this knowledge, you come up with innovative technical and interactive ideas and media outputs.
What can I do after SintLucas?
You’ll build a strong portfolio that will allow you to start working in the creative sector straight away, set up your own business, or progress to a higher professional education (HBO) programme. Consider careers such as cross-media or graphic designer, motion designer, interaction designer, illustrator/animator, visual storyteller or UX/UI designer. Suitable higher professional education programmes include ICT & Media Design, Interactive Design, Illustration/Animation or Media & Game Technologies.
Former student Jim van de Sande studied Media Design at SintLucas and now works as a Concept Creative at Megawatt in Eindhoven. Read his story here.
How does the application and admission process work?
You can apply for the course of your choice via our website from 31 October 2025 (09.00). After applying, you will receive an invitation to a matching interview at SintLucas. During an interview with a lecturer and a student from the course of your choice, we will discuss together whether you and SintLucas are a good match. Above all, we aim for an open and relaxed conversation, so that you can make a good choice of study programme. To prepare for the interview, you can bring along some of your (creative) work. It is also possible to complete an assignment. After the interview, you will receive a study recommendation. This recommendation may be positive (we believe you are a good fit for SintLucas and the programme) or negative (we believe another school and programme would suit you better). Even with a negative recommendation, you are still eligible for admission to SintLucas. We trust that, with our advice, you will make a good choice of study programme. Read more about application and admission here.
If you have any questions about this, please send an email to aanmelding@sintlucas.nl.
Student Rens:
“In the first year, you learn the basics of various software programmes, for example, through creative assignments. As well as the ‘regular’ lessons, we also had ‘Ambition’ modules where you could come up with your own project and set your own learning goals to further your development. The transition to further education went quite smoothly for me; I made friends easily. I also have a good rapport with the teachers.”
