Imagine: your favourite trainer brand asks you to create an advertising campaign. Anything goes and you may live on any media: websites, apps, social media, a game or an experience in virtual reality. Do you already have an idea of how you would go about this? Then this media design course is a perfect fit for you.
As a media designer, you are involved in design, communication, interaction and technology on a daily basis. New technologies such as AI play an increasingly important role. Unique to the Media Design program at SintLucas is the close collaboration with (creative) companies and the focus on technological developments, storytelling, and visual communication. Have you designed something? Then you can create it in our Makerspace and with the help of our modern technological facilities.
You start with a broad foundation and, during the program, you put together your own learning path, tailored to your talent and interests. With your choice of projects, internships, or studios, you can specialize or develop yourself more broadly as a media designer.
Within the media and design programme, it is also possible to opt for the Personal Learning Route Media Design. This is a new form of education within SintLucas in which there is maximum space for your learning process. You make your own choices when it comes to projects, your place of learning and, for example, time management.

What am I doing?
A typical approach of a media designer? You start by coming up with an idea, a concept. For this, you research the client, who the target group is and the problem for which you are developing a solution.
You try out different forms, styles and media to get your story and message across in a catchy way. Then you make prototypes. This helps you discuss your ideas and find out if they work. As a final step, you start working on the creation process. This includes elaborations such as 3D visualisations or the latest forms of robotics or AI.
What am I making?
The work of the media designer is broad. Examples of media you work on are websites, apps, virtual reality applications, animations, games, (digital) illustrations or posters. You also develop complete campaigns combining logo, corporate identity, photos and video. Also consider applications such as experience or art installations used in a museum.
What will I learn in the media design course?
In the introductory phase of the program, you develop a solid foundation of knowledge and skills: 2D and 3D design, animation, UX/UI design, interactive media, motion graphics, video editing, creative prototyping, and various software programs including the Adobe packages and Blender. You learn to develop concepts, work out ideas visually, and create digital and physical products that communicate and make an impact.
In the specialization phase, you work on assignments in the field that interests you most. You can also choose large projects in which you collaborate with students from other programs in studios, for example in the areas of Visual Design & Motion, Game Design & Technology, or Media & Interaction Design.
In the profiling phase, you further develop yourself as a professional on your way to the creative-technical industry or higher professional education. Naturally, general subjects such as Dutch, English, mathematics, and citizenship are also covered.
Deepening or a broad education: optional subjects and studios
Within the Media Design program, you can deepen your knowledge in a specific field or develop broadly as a media designer. You do this, among other things, by taking elective modules. Examples of these are Game Play, Animation, Illustration, and Creative Deepening. You can also specialize or gain broad experience by choosing certain assignments during the program or an internship in a specific field. The same applies to working in Studios that focus on specific themes.
The elective modules and themes of the Studios can change every year, so that our education always aligns with what companies demand.
Where do I do my internship?
You will do two six-month internships. Depending on your interests and learning wishes, you will choose an organisation that suits you. The Media Design programme offers a wide range of possibilities: at an advertising or communication agency, a design studio, a multimedia company, a game, animation or illustration studio, a digital design agency or, for example, a product development company. You can also work in user experience design or interaction design. In addition, organisations in the field of social design or interactive art design agencies are among the possibilities.

What should I be able to do and like?
You have a sense of design, communication and technology. You can empathise with others and are interested in people’s behaviour. You are curious, inquisitive and like to experiment. Naturally, you follow technological innovations and other trends closely. By combining this knowledge, you come up with innovative technical and interactive ideas and media expressions.
What can I do after SintLucas?
You build a strong portfolio with which you can immediately start working in the creative sector, start your own business, or progress to higher professional education (HBO). Think, for example, of professions such as cross-media or graphic designer, motion designer, interaction designer, illustrator/animator, visual storyteller, or UX/UI designer. Suitable HBO programs include, for example, ICT & Media Design, Interactive Design, Illustration/Animation, or Media & Game Technologies.
Former student Jim van de Sande studied Media Design at SintLucas and now works as a Concept Creative at Megawatt in Eindhoven. Check out his story here.
How does application and admission work?
You apply from 31 October 2025 (09.00) via our website for the programme of your choice. After your application, you will receive an invitation for a matching interview at SintLucas. During an interview with a teacher and student from the study programme of your choice, we will check together whether you and SintLucas are a match. Above all, we have an open and relaxed conversation, so you can make a good study choice. In preparation for the interview, you can bring (creative) work with you. It is also possible to make an assignment. After the interview, you will receive a study advice. This advice can be positive (we think you fit in with SintLucas and the study programme) or negative (we think another school and study programme would suit you better). Even with a negative recommendation, you are admissible at SintLucas. We trust that you will make a good study choice with our advice. Read more about application and admission here.
If you have a question about this, please send an e-mail to aanmelding@sintlucas.nl.
Student Rens:
“In the first year, you learn the basics of, for example, different software programs through creative assignments. In addition to the ‘regular’ lessons, we also had Ambition modules in which you can come up with your own project and set your own learning goals to further develop yourself. The transition to MBO went fairly smoothly for me; I made friends easily. I also have good contact with the teachers.”
