Photography is everywhere. During the program, you’ll learn how to tell a story through images. You’ll learn to collaborate and conduct research, get to know your peers, and develop your own portfolio.
Your interests and fascinations form the basis for your work. You’ll take into account the target audience or the exhibition where your work will be displayed. Through independent photography, you’ll create your own style.
Many photographers work largely independently. Others become part of an organisation soon after graduating and work on assignments for various clients. Photographers often collaborate with editors, copywriters or journalists. In the advertising world, there is close cooperation with designers. A photographer who has a large studio often works together with set builders, make‑up artists, studio assistants or lighting technicians.

What do I do?
Photography is about seeing and feeling. The creative process starts with a story, a good idea or concept, or a feeling you want to convey through a photo or series of photos. You conduct research, which forms the basis for your concept. The next challenge is to create the right image.
You will learn all about photographic techniques, digital and analogue photography, and image editing. You will also learn how to use AI in your images in a functional and responsible way. You will gain experience with different forms of photography, including studio, documentary, portrait, advertising and fashion photography. Ultimately, you will develop your own photographic style.
What do I make?
You will work towards a final product for a client. This could be a product photo, travel photo, corporate photo, food photo, concert photo or photo report, for example, but there are many more possibilities. You will take photos on location or in a studio. You will also have the freedom to come up with and create your own projects.
What do I learn?
Alongside general subjects such as Dutch, English, mathematics and citizenship, you will work on your creativity and personal development. You will learn all about camera techniques, lighting, digital image editing, AI applications, image analysis, styling and entrepreneurship. You will also learn how to develop an idea into a complete photography production.
At SintLucas, you can borrow professional equipment free of charge. We have an extensive range of equipment available in our equipment library. You will start by developing creative and technical basic skills. After your internship, you will build an exam portfolio consisting of assignments and your own projects. You will complete the programme with an ambition project, such as an additional internship or your own project, in which you further develop your personal style.

From sole proprietorships to large photo studios, whether specialized or general-purpose, in the Netherlands or abroad.

What should I be able to do and like?
You can work independently as well as part of a team. You are interested in visual communication and enjoy telling stories through images. You often work in different locations, are sociable and find it easy to connect with people.
You are comfortable working independently, are flexible, well organised and open to feedback. You often take photographs in your spare time. You also enjoy experimenting and coming up with your own ideas. With a critical eye, you reflect on your own work and discuss the work of others.
You don’t just learn at school, but also outside the classroom through various excursions and workshops, as well as visits to museums and special exhibitions.
What can I do after SintLucas?
After completing the Photography programme, you can, for example:
- Work as a freelance photographer
- Work as a photographer’s assistant
- Work in a photography studio
- Continue your studies at a university of applied sciences (HBO) in the Netherlands or abroad.
How does application and admission work?
Starting October 30, 2026, you can register via the website and will receive an invitation to a matching interview. You can bring along a creative piece of work or complete an assignment, after which you will receive a positive or negative admission recommendation.
