“I connect creatives inside and outside SintLucas”
In what ways are you the source of creativity?
The special thing is that I do not have a creative background. However, I am the link between the creatives inside and outside SintLucas and I am very inventive in thinking up solutions. Together with my colleagues, I constantly look at what is possible. A good example is an assignment that came in from the municipality of Boxtel. Their stolen coat of arms had been found, but it was unfortunately damaged. This was not a suitable project for a large group of students, but the assignment was too special to turn down. So I checked with a colleague whether we could still do something with this. As it turned out, there was a student to whom this assignment was an excellent fit as an interesting and meaningful graduation project. She perfectly reconstructed the coat of arms and thus successfully completed her exam. So by approaching this application in a creative way, I was able to help both the client and the student. And I get a lot of energy from that. Thanks to my fresh perspective, students can continue to grow in a fun and instructive way so that they are ready for the working field. And it’s just super cool to see that they are proud of their work.

What makes SintLucas a pleasant working environment?
Whether you are a colleague or a student, you can be who you are. I don’t have to pretend to be different. There is respect for everyone. I feel at home here. I also feel safe enough to be vulnerable and share less fun things with my colleagues too. If I find something challenging, such as professional issues, I can go to them well. We are very open and keep talking to each other. What are we running into? How could we approach this differently? What is needed for this? We express our appreciation for each other, but also give positive feedback to keep each other on our toes. We try to get the best out of each other.

How does SintLucas make sure you keep enjoying your work?
With room for autonomy and own input. I let students grow with customised projects and fine internships, SintLucas lets me grow through customised work. I was allowed to find out for myself how I keep the fun in my work. Which tasks do I like best and how can I schedule them best? On Mondays, I work at home. That gives me peace of mind, because then I make metres and can create an overview for the rest of the week at my leisure. But I am not someone who can sit alone all week. I love the contact with students, colleagues, training companies and clients. Fortunately, I have the freedom to seek out that contact. When I am at school, I often walk around the studios. To see what students are working on and to talk to colleagues. We can then spar together and initiate new ideas. For instance, I discovered that at other study programmes, trainees first met in the auditorium during return days at school. I thought that was a fitting idea for us too. Students from different studios are friends, but they don’t see much of each other during internship periods. When I suggest something like that, I get the confidence to set it up that way. Now on return days, we gather in the auditorium with soup or hot chocolate with whipped cream and a cake. I love that I can make a difference with little things like this.
