Internet disruption due to DDOS attacks

Since the beginning of this week, several educational institutions have been experiencing a limited internet connection due to a ddos attack at network company SURF, the ICT cooperative of Dutch educational and research institutions. SintLucas is also experiencing problems from this network failure at both locations. Due to the failure, internet and online school applications cannot be used or are limited.

A ddos attack is a cyber attack in which a large amount of data traffic is sent to a computer or network with the aim of disrupting or crippling the operation of a website, server or network. This attack is not specifically aimed at SintLucas, but at educational institutions working with SURF’s network.

The vmbo and mbo education at SintLucas will continue where possible. Lesson activities can continue given that it appears that the malfunction will be resolved after some time. It is as yet unclear how long these ddos attacks will continue.

Pupils and students are kept informed by teachers where necessary.
